Volunteer Spotlight: Jennifer Hardin
Q: How long have you volunteered for YHS and what made you want to get involved?
A: I've been at YHS for three years. I wanted to become involved with my new community as I'd been here for 3 months without knowing anybody and was starting to get cabin fever. (I'm on disability and work was always how I'd met people/friends.) ...AND I've always loved animals! I wondered if you could use me for things other than walking pets/cleaning cages and was pleasantly surprised that you could! I started out answering phones for a few months, then moved on to admin where I sent out mailings and helped enter in donations, sometimes filing or whatever they needed help with; then in a volunteer newsletter- help was needed writing bios for the website, so I've been writing those for the dogs since I have the detailed Behavior Assessments to work off of. Been doing that ever since, 2 years ago in January- from home so I can do them at any hour!
Q: What is your favorite thing to do as a volunteer and why?
A: My favorite thing to do is just being part of the team and knowing that my contributions are ultimately a help for getting more animals placed! I really want them all in loving, forever homes and to know you're part of a group where that's Everyone's goal is uplifting!
Q: Do you have any tips for new volunteers?
A: My advice would be to learn all you can. There's so much experience and knowledge here; you can expand and broaden your know-how of handling/working & caring for animals as well as perhaps even thinking in brand news ways! ...All while making friends!
Q: What is your favorite thing to do when you're not volunteering for YHS?
A: I love mysteries & SciFi fantasies, ie. (Sherlock, Elementary, Grimm..) And I'm working on my big dream of being a published author/ illustrator.
Q: Do you have pets at home? Tell us about them!
A: I adore my 10 yr. rescued Australian/German Shepherd mutt Cassie! She's silly and sweet- loves squeaky toys & wrestling with my mom's 5 yr. Schnauzer/Doxie Sadie! She's very gentle and tolerant playing with the terrier!
*If you know a volunteer who you think should be in the spotlight, email email@example.com and tell us about them!
Logging your hours is essential to YHS for a variety of reasons. We track the total amount for grant applications and tax purposes. Knowing when and where folks are volunteering also helps us identify if there are times or areas where we need more help.
