Volunteer Spotlight: Rebecca Horner!
Rebecca volunteers at Yavapai Humane Society's satellite location, the Prescott PetSmart YHS Cat Adoption Center! The volunteers who work there care tremendously for the cats and treat them as their own. There are currently openings on the PetSmart YHS Cat Adoption Center team. Click here to apply!
Q: How long have you volunteered for YHS?
A: I've been volunteering for over two years now – it’s hard to believe it’s been that long.
Q: What made you want to get involved at YHS?
A: It all started with a feral cat - I found him in our backyard one morning, almost lifeless. His eyes were matted shut and he was heavily congested. It was chilly that morning, so I brought him inside and got him cleaned up. I was so happy when he looked up at me for the first time and purred. He seemed so contented. Unfortunately, he was too sick. I lost him the next morning after spending the night with him. The short time I had with him changed me forever. I signed up to be an YHS volunteer shortly after that. I wanted to make a difference in his memory.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do as a volunteer and why?
A: My favorite thing as a volunteer is spending time with our cats; especially the ones who are scared and unsure about things. I love each and every one as if they were my own. We try our best to make our cats feel at home until we find their forever home.
Q: Any tips you have for new volunteers?
A: Volunteering isn't just about cuddling kittens (or puppies) all day. A lot of work goes into making sure our animals stay happy and healthy. I think it’s very important to remember that as you’re starting out. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but it’s worth it. I enjoy the rewards of volunteering and wouldn't trade it for anything.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not volunteering for YHS?
A: I love being outdoors and taking photos in my spare time. Photography is my passion. You know that saying “Take time to smell the flowers”? Well, I do that, and then I take a photo of it and share it with others.
Q: Do you have pets at home? Tell us about them!
A: I belong to one very handsome, orange boy named Preston. He is such a constant joy to be around with. I honestly don’t know what I would do without him.
Q: Anything else you would like to share about your YHS experience?
A: It’s been a pleasure being a volunteer and working with such a great group of ladies at the PetSmart Adoption Center. Becoming a volunteer has been one of the best decisions I've ever made.
